If you were caught up in the non-stop action of the first book Ashfall, you will not be disappointed by the second book Ashen Winter. I had a very difficult time putting this book down. It was disturbing, and gruesome and disheartening, and yet I was cheering for Alex the whole time! Every-time I thought it couldn’t get any worse, somehow it did. It starts with Alex and Darla at his Aunt and Uncle’s farm, but when a lead arises they quickly go on the hunt for Alex’s parents. And it’s all downhill from there. I’ve said it before, but the author does a great job showing it, disasters, whether it’s war or famine or earthquakes or volcano eruptions, are awful and awful events change people. Not always for the better. My heart tells me, that humans would bond together in a time of need, but unfortunately as we’ve seen many times in reality, it comes down to survival of the fittest. If you enjoy a good dystopian series, you will enjoy the Ashfall series by Mike Mullin.
